Konyaspor is one of the rooted clubs in Turkish football, and its history began with the establishment of Konya Gençlerbirliği in 1922. Gençlerbirliği had black and white colors, while Konya İdmanyurdu, founded in 1923, had green and white colors. The intense rivalry between these two clubs lasted for many years and ended with the establishment of Konyaspor in 1981. Konyaspor merged under one roof, adopting İdmanyurdu's colors. The merger in 1981 was a significant turning point that changed the history of football in Konya. In the 1980s, discussions were held for a merger between Konyaspor and Konya İdmanyurdu to end the football rivalry in the city. As a result of these discussions, the decision to merge under the name Konyaspor was made, adopting İdmanyurdu's green and white colors. In 2016, the general assembly reevaluated the club's founding date, officially recognizing it as June 22, 1922. Thus, Konyaspor continued to deepen its historical roots as the only major representative of Konya in national leagues.
